Character Information
Character Name: Hazel Lockwood
Character Pronouns: she/her
Canon: OC
Canon Age: 19 + ten years of deadtime limbo
Canon Point: Just after helping Heather pass on to the afterlife.
Canon Link:
Hazel's world is identical to present day Earth, with the addition of magic. Magical beings, from witches to vampires and everything in between, exist under the veneer of regular society. Their influence on history has been relatively low because they prefer to keep to themselves, most believing that regular people simply aren't worth their time. While disagreements occasionally spill over and cause repercussions for the unknowing masses, for the most part the magical community is aggressively insular and perfectly happy with its underground status.
This complacency most likely stems from the fact that the only thing 'underground' about them is their supernatural abilities - most of the unnatural beings on earth are old money at this point (thanks to their extended lifespan) and have created an array of snobbish organizations which they use to mingle in public; while there are magical people living in more working class situations, it's rare to find such a scenario where the person hasn't chosen this lifestyle voluntarily. Much more likely is that they were the victims of someone's whims and are now trying to hold down their job at the packing plant while also howling through the swamps once a month.
For the first nineteen years of her life, Hazel had no knowledge that all over the world werewolves were sinking their claws into the cattle industry or that witches held massive divination sessions to determine the optimal stock purchases for the year. She was born a regular human to regular human parents in the northeastern United States, and lived a blissfully normal life filled with the usual sorrows and triumphs of childhood and teenagerdom.
Then she went to college.
During spring break, Hazel decided to be a little adventurous and join a group of her friends and friends' friends in going down to New Orleans. Piling into overstuffed hotel rooms and exploring a new city seemed like the sort of thing you were supposed to get out of the college experience, after all. Unfortunately, in what was the beginning of Hazel's chronic poor luck, the fun didn't last very long - several days into the trip, she was ambushed and murdered while walking back to her hotel alone. The culprit was a serial killer who had already racked up an impressive body count by the time he reached Hazel; it would be several years until he was caught, and several months after that before he confirmed that she had indeed been one of his victims.
In the meantime, Hazel's body had already set sail on a new journey. A week or so after being dumped unceremoniously into the Mississippi, the corpse resurfaced during a heavy rainstorm and began to float down the river like some kind of macabre pool toy. It was spotted and pulled ashore by a woman named Edith, who had been out for a walk in the wee hours of the morning and had no interest in turning the body over to the police.
As it turned out, Edith was a witch. This would have been nothing more than an interesting piece of trivia if not for the fact that she was also a witch with a vendetta. Edith had once been part of the supernatural high society in New Orleans - however, her choice in romantic partners would be her downfall. An old lover as vindictive as she was and with far greater ambitions returned to showcase his newfound abilities - by binding Edith to her home and sealing the majority of her powers.
This would have been the end of things if not for Edith's elemental affinity with water; when it rained she was able to draw a small amount of power from the water and either store it or use it to push the boundaries of her bonds just a little. It was during one such rainstorm that she saw Hazel's corpse, and the opportunity that accompanied it - while she herself could not leave the city to pursue her revenge, she could craft a servant that could.
Hazel's body was summarily spirited back to Edith's home and embalmed, using the tools which the witch had collected and used during her days of freedom. The preserved body was then stored for the next ten years as Edith slowly built up enough power to attempt the resurrection.
She finally grew tired of waiting any longer and, on the night of a particularly vicious thunderstorm, began the spell. However, Edith had made a huge error - years of being unable to cast spells had prompted her to miscalculate the amount of power required to create a zombie. Hazel was raised, but her personality and consciousness had returned as well.
Although Edith was less than pleased with her relative failure of an undead slave (and Hazel even less so) she managed to find a way to make things work. Hazel may have been able to mouth off and protest, but the witch still held the ability to rend her soul from her body and send her back to her untimely grave. With this threat looming over her head, Hazel had no choice but to acquiesce to Edith's demands and set off across America in search of the mage who had bound Edith and a revenge she had no interest in.
Along the way she found herself embroiled in the business of other supernatural entities whenever they seemed to intersect with unwitting humans - everything from turning a lycanthropy curse back onto the mage who cast it to, most recently, exposing the killer of a young prostitute who was murdered decades ago and helping her spirit finally find peace. The deeper she descended into this hitherto unknown world the more she found herself wondering - was there any place with room for her, even amongst monsters?

AU Information
AU Name: Hazel Lockwood
AU Age: 19
Physical Differences: Very few differences. Her base appearance is identical to her canon counterpart, and while the location of some of her scars may differ the horrifying multitude of them is still the same. The only significant difference is that all those past wounds have scarred over, while her canon zombie form had many injuries that were permanently stitched closed thanks to having been inflicted on undead flesh.
AU History:
Born in the land of the Silver Court, Hazel was an only child to parents of modest wealth - no great social standing, no vast inheritance, but their work kept the family comfortable. As she grew to young adulthood she was sent to one of the larger cities in the area to apprentice under a noted painter, having always nurtured great artistic talents of her own. It was a wonderful experience and one she was excelling in until tragedy robbed her of her future.
Returning to her flat late one night from the studio, Hazel was ambushed by a murdered that had been plaguing the city for months - a Ripperesque figure with a particular affinity for young women. Dragged into an alleyway and eviscerated on the cobblestones, she would have lost her life then and there if not for the timely arrival of a third party scaring her assailant off. Unfortunately for her, this curious bystander was a vampire with an agenda of her own.
Although Edith made use of her Silver abilities to bring the girl back from the brink of death, salvation had come with a cost; she revealed that in the processing of healing Hazel she'd intentionally flooded her body with a poison that, while harmless in its inert state, could be triggered at a moment's notice by its maker and send its victim to an extremely painful death. Why inflict such cruelty on a stranger, you may ask? The answer is simple: to save her own life Edith now required Hazel to accept her as her Maker and journey to Castle Courtsheart with the intention of infiltrating the Blue Court. A former paramour of the vampire's had betrayed her in the worst way possible, escaping into the safety of his own court's lands (and guises) with a vast portion of her most valuable library books. Revenge is the only thing that would satisfy her now, but to extract retribution Edith first needed to find the bastard.
Hazel couldn't have cared less for her part, but what choice did she have? If she wanted to escape her new fate with her life, she first needed to play along.
AU Personality:
At her core, Hazel is still essentially the same girl she was in her home universe. She's reckless, stubborn, and more often than not prone to fits of petty childishness at trivial provocations. The traumas she's experienced are similar, and have left her damaged in similar ways - she still tries to portray herself as more detached than she could ever hope to be and struggles with letting people in, afraid that her trust will be met with more pain. However, there are a few key differences.
The Hazel of the AU world is far less defeatist than her canon counterpart; while her original self sees no way to escape a fate that has essentially already been sealed, her alternate counterpart still believes that she can fight what Edith has planned for her and escape becoming a tool. The supernatural creatures infesting this world treat her with cordiality rather than the open disdain she canonically experienced as a zombie, providing more opportunities to scrabble for footholds that surely must exist somewhere. Although still struggling to allow other people to help her, she hasn't given up. If she just fights hard enough, tries everything, then she can still save herself. Hope still burns within her and it drives her to be a more active participant in her own life, rather than passively allowing abuse to be heaped upon her.
That said, she still does harbor a warped perception of herself. The original Hazel has internalized the disgust she encountered from others and allowed it to intermingle with her own horror at what she's become, leading her to believe that her very soul was rotting from the inside out and that she was a coward by virtue of allowing herself to continue living rather than seeking true death. While this Hazel still feels herself to be 'human,' she's aware that there's a very distinct possibility she'll still be turned even if she does manage to extricate herself from Edith's influence. The longer she remains in the castle and is exposed to the darker parts of the vampires' world the more revulsion she feels at what is accepted as normal - and what she herself is gradually coming to subconsciously accept as well. There's a very real fear Hazel's buried that she'll lose everything about her that makes her worth saving, something she can't confront because she has no solution for it. How could she ever bear returning to her parents a monster? As with all of her insecurities, she represses them just as deeply as her canon self.
However, one thing that no world can change is how powerfully kind Hazel is. No matter how hard she tries to kill her own compassion, time and again she finds herself reaching out to people the world has turned its back on. It rarely benefits her - and here, in a world rife with deadly politics, could even get her killed - but she simply can't force herself to stop giving a shit about those she knows have no one to care about their struggles. She understands how badly she's been damaged, and can't allow someone else to suffer the same experiences if there's anything she can do to prevent it.
...unsurprisingly, she is just as disdainful of vampires in the AU world as she was in canon. Who knew!

Novice Information
Starting Season: First season.
Maker: An NPC named Edith.
Anticipated Court: Hazel will be starting as Silver but has been commanded by her original Maker to fail into Blue in order to pursue Edith's treacherous ex-flame. While she's a bit short on 'fun' at the moment given her unhappy circumstances, Hazel still possesses traits that made her a surprisingly natural fit for her destined court - she's got a petty streak a mile long and is more than happy to play dirty purely for the satisfaction of lording her win over all the other losers. She tries to present herself as cynical and disaffected, but the truth of the matter is that her heart is still both large and soft despite everything she's experienced - or maybe even because of it. She's all too aware of the cruelty she's been forced into, although less understanding of how it's warped her own perception of herself. Hazel carries her own "weight of reality" with her, and that's strengthened her shoulders enough to withstand whatever truth the history of vampirekind may have in store for her.
And, you know, like...she does like to have a good time when her life's a little less stressful. Honest!
